Volunteering at YMCA MK
Thank you to our volunteers, you make a huge difference, helping young people in MK to belong, contribute and thrive. Whether you’ve supported us with our youth work, residents, activities, fundraising or events, we appreciate you and the time you’ve invested.
Volunteering is more than just giving your time, it helps young people reach their potential, it helps us create a community.
Here’s what our hospital navigator volunteers had to say….
“I like knowing I’m helping someone during a difficult time. It brings me peace knowing I can help someone grow emotionally when most people only concentrate on the physical.”
“There’s no better feeling than to stand by someone’s side and to watch them flourish.”
“I volunteer because I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping someone in need when they need it most. I’ll never forget what someone said to me that it only takes one person to change your life and that person needs to care and demonstrate a willingness to listen and be there for someone. Because of that reason I want to be that person for as many people as possible to ensure no one feels alone fighting a challenge that seems never-ending! Believing in those who don’t have self-belief/high esteem can really make such huge change to someone’s trajectory in life.”
“I volunteer because I had a rocky childhood and appreciate the value of someone’s time to lend an ear or offer advice and support. I volunteer to be something to someone that I needed, and to pay it forward from all the support I received through my life. Connecting with a mentee seeing them open up and learn to trust you is incredibly rewarding. I love my meetings with my mentee, and I feel very proud of both myself, and (mainly) her when we have a breakthrough, or a really good session or trying a new tactic that helps her.”

It’s human nature to feel good after helping someone out. Volunteering can also help you gain valuable new skills and experiences and boost your confidence.
There are many ways you can support young people, if you have a good idea, we’d love to hear from you.
