Scott’s Story

Scott’s Story

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the YM. It’s funny, but they’re like my parents.”

Finding Support

When Scott first came to YMCA Milton Keynes, he was going through a difficult time. After leaving a very supportive Special Educational Needs school, he found it hard to adjust to life on his own. Things at home were also tough, and he wanted to move out and become more independent.

Scott didn’t know exactly what the future would look like, but he was ready to take the next step.

Growing in Confidence

Scott moved into our Stage 1 supported housing and quickly began to settle in. With the right support around him, he grew in confidence and soon moved into Stage 2 housing, which is for young people in part-time work or education.

During this time, Scott had an injury at work and had to stop working for over a year. It was a hard time, but he wasn’t alone.

The YMCA really helped and supported me,” Scott says.

While recovering, he joined in with many of the activities at the YMCA, made strong friendships, and even became a Youth Ambassador. He wanted to give back to the place that had supported him and helped him grow.

A Fresh Start

Scott now lives in his own flat and is back in work. He feels happier, more confident, and proud of what he’s achieved.

“I’m just grateful for what the YM has done,” he says.

“The staff sit there every day getting everything thrown at them, but they are there for us.”

From feeling unsure about the future to living independently, Scott’s story shows what’s possible with the right support and a place to belong.
