At YMCA MK, one of our main objectives is to support our young people into inspiring work.

We caught up with our Corporate Partnerships Lead, Will McCormack, who went into the details of what our Employability Programme does for our residents. Read on to find out more.

What does YMCA MK’s Employability Programme offer residents?

Whether they want to gain a qualification, start an apprenticeship, need help with CV writing and interview skills, or simply need guidance as to which career path they should take, our Employability Programme provides the support they need to achieve meaningful employment.

Our Employability Programme is delivered by Employment Coaches who work with residents on a one-to-one basis to help our young people identify and achieve their individual career goals.

It’s important that we help our residents to identify their skills, attributes and motivation through employment activities, such as our regular job club. We also offer access to external courses and training run by organisations such as The Prince’s Trust, in addition to creating job openings with local companies looking to recruit from our pool of residents.

Which local companies and training providers have supported this service to date, and how have they got involved?

We have a large cohort of organisations wishing to support our Employability Programme from all different angles and all in different ways, such as:

  • Holiday Inn and Jurys Inn – offering our residents facility tours, employment opportunities and training including apprenticeships
  • MK College with a huge variety of training opportunities and courses to include distance learning and varied apprenticeships
  • Brioche Pasquier to support with mock interviews and employability support
  • Bridgman & Bridgman with training, work experience and kickstart opportunities
  • SJP Contracts with training and paid employment in construction
  • The Prince’s Trust with a plethora of exciting and dynamic courses leading to work opportunities
  • Worktree with career coaching and resident networking lunches (I could carry on forever!)

What impact does this support from outside the campus have on the confidence of YMCA’s residents?

It boosts confidence, creates goals and objectives, inspires, invigorates and creates a sense of what can be achieved through a positive daily structure!

How does YMCA support young people when they start new positions with local employers?

The relationship from myself with the employer/trainer to our Employment & Activities Manager Mark, our Employment Coaches and our residents is a very open and transparent one. We are all aware and have experienced what life can throw at us and how that can impact our working lives. We don’t ignore any issues that our residents might be experiencing, but we work through them. This is all part of the support we provide.

What are the benefits to employers of supporting the Employability Programme?

We have a diverse and exceptionally talented group of young people living at YMCA MK and any employer will see this given the time and support. They will be able to see how they are making a difference to the lives of young people and also how their talent can enhance the employer’s business.
