January is National Mentoring Month and we’re shining a light on the incredible support our Employment Coaches offer our residents as they work towards identifying and reaching their education, training and career goals.

Employment is key to breaking the cycle of poverty many of our resident’s face, which is why our person-centred Employability Programme is central to our pathway of support. The one-to-one sessions provided by our Employment Coaches help our residents to look ahead and work towards a more positive and brighter future.

Whether it’s preparing for interviews, selecting an apprenticeship, completing university application forms or helping with job searches, our Employment Coaches are on hand to give all our residents personalised support centred around their individual needs.

Speaking about the service, Employment & Activities Manager Mark Smith said, “Some of our residents have had to deal with many challenges during their early lives, so it can be difficult for them to realise their full potential and the scope of opportunity available. Our Employability Programme is designed to help our residents identify their attributes and strengths. This first step is important in terms of building their confidence and self-esteem. Once our residents believe in themselves, they can then take the next steps towards achieving their goals.”

We’re also pleased to announce that as of this month, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be able to offer employment support to local young people aged 18-24 in Milton Keynes from our campus. The Youth Hub will provide assistance by appointment only to people who have been referred by the DWP. While placed temporarily within our campus, in the future we hope the Youth Hub will be located within our ground-floor retail unit, which will offer its own entrance and facilities.

At YMCA MK we are fortunate to work with many organisations that provide training and employment opportunities for our residents. If you’d like to find out how your organisation can get involved, click here.
