Sophie came to YMCA Milton Keynes following a breakdown in a family relationship. She needed a place of her own so she could focus on working towards her career goal.

During her support sessions with her keyworker, Sophie identified that she would benefit from counselling support. At YMCA MK, we offer a free counselling service to all residents, which is provided by YiS Young People’s Mental Health. We completed a referral and Sophie was able to begin her counselling sessions in our Wellbeing Suite.

It also became clear that Sophie needed some help with budgeting. Sophie worked with her keyworker to develop a practical way to manage her money. This enabled her to make sure that her accommodation charge was prioritised. As Sophie was on a low income, she was also helped with her Universal Credit application to ensure that she didn’t fall into arrears.

Once Sophie felt reassured that her finances were in better order, she was able to focus on working towards her career goal. At the time, Sophie had a part-time job in a restaurant, but her long-term goal was to become a legal receptionist. With the support of our Employment Coach, Sophie rewrote her CV, took part in interview skills training and completed job applications for her first office-based role.

We were thrilled for Sophie when she was offered an administrative position. Sophie has grown in confidence and is now looking ahead at building on what she has achieved during her time at YMCA MK.
